Inspect the Alternator Belt

Over time, however, belts can wear out, stretch, and in areas where temperatures get particularly frigid over winter, potentially even crack due to brittleness. Regularly inspect the belt for signs of wear or fraying and replace damaged components immediately. It’s also crucial to make sure your belt is properly tightened upon being reinstalled to avoid slippage. 

Battery and Alternator Connection

The alternator and battery work in unison to power your vehicle. Seasonality is important to consider in colder months, when dipping temperatures put additional strain on both components due to the increased demand from heaters, defrosters, etc. For best safety and performance practices, it’s key to make sure your battery has a solid charge and that the terminals are free of any corrosion that could disrupt power transfer. 

Monitor Electrical Load

Seasonal transitions, especially those that bring colder temperatures, can be hard on your electrical load due to the use of accessories like heated seats, defrosters and more. Limiting excessive electrical use where possible (i.e. turning off unnecessary accessories when your vehicle is idling or starting up) helps to reduce the chance of your alternator overheating or failing. It’s also important to watch for any sudden performance variances and to get things looked at ASAP if you notice a decline in output. 

Pay Attention to Warning Signs

Finally, it’s important to pay attention to early warning signs of developing issues and, to reiterate our tip above, be as proactive as possible.  Dimming headlights, flickering dashboard lights, or unusual noises (such as grinding or squealing) are key indicators that something may be wrong with your alternator and should be addressed as quickly as possible. Failing to do so can lead to much bigger, more expensive issues down the line.
