Top Winter Care Tips for Industrial Diesel Generators

Canadian winters are notoriously harsh on industrial generators (and most machinery, for that matter), especially in areas of Northern Alberta, BC, and Saskatchewan, where cold temperatures, snow, and ice can impact performance. While there’s no way to control the weather, you can help mitigate your generator’s risk for damage.

Properly maintaining your generator during winter is one of the best ways to protect your unit, avoid unexpected failures, and ensure your operations run smoothly all year round. At TRIC Power, we’re proud to partner with customers across the northern regions of western Canada to provide maintenance support you can trust when it matters most. Below, we’ll cover some of the top tips for keeping your industrial diesel generator in top condition. Read on to learn more!

Use Winter-Grade Diesel Fuel

Fuel quality is crucial in winter conditions, and using the right type can significantly impact your unit’s efficiency. Winter-grade diesel, commonly known as “No. 1 Diesel,” is formulated to avoid gelling at colder temperatures, and fuel additives can further aid cold-weather performance by lowering the pour point and improving combustion.

Always double-check your fuel supply and switch to a winter-grade blend before temperatures drop. Also, ensure that your tanks are regularly inspected to protect against water contamination, which can lead to blocked lines.

Keep the Battery Charged

Cold temperatures often strain generator batteries and can make it difficult for them to hold a charge once the weather dips below freezing. It’s crucial to check your battery’s charge capacity and output all year round, but this becomes even more essential in the winter months. Weak and undercharged batteries are vulnerable to freezing, which can lead to permanent damage and/or the inability to start. Using battery warmers or moving units indoors can help minimize their exposure to the cold, and checking terminals for corrosion allows you to treat any developing issues quickly for maximum efficiency.

Preheat the Engine Block

Diesel engines can be difficult to start in cold weather, particularly if they aren’t preheated. Block heaters help to warm the engine’s coolant, which makes it easier to start, even in cold temperatures. While most modern units come with built-in heaters, if yours does not, post-purchase installation may be of benefit to avoid unnecessary wear and tear from cold starts.

Check Oil and Coolant Levels Regularly

Winter weather changes the viscosity of your generator’s engine oil, making it thicker and harder to circulate through the engine. Not only does this lead to far less efficient output, but it also presents the risk of aggressive wear and tear and significant damage occurring over time. Using the right oil, specifically a type graded for cold weather and ensuring your generator’s coolant is at the correct level and mixed correctly (50/50 blend of antifreeze and water or as directed by the generator’s manufacturer) are vital ways to keep your generator running efficiently.

Perform Regular Maintenance

Finally, the harsh conditions found in winter make it crucial to stay on top of scheduled inspections and be as proactive as possible for maintenance. Try to inspect key parts like belts, filters and other components before the cold hits to give yourself extra time to address issues rather than being caught off guard.

Regular inspections and prompt repairs can help prevent emergency breakdowns during extreme weather, saving time and reducing operational downtime.
